 Community Sports Officer

Project details

The aim of the project is to develop and increase the provision of leisure facilities in urban green space for young people. Overall  11 sites in 8 different wards of social deprivation have been installed on which a series of activities and sporting events take place for young people as well as sport coaching for adults.

Project aims:

  • Providing local young people with a range of leisure facilities that are inclusive of and acceptable to the local community & suitable for their needs.

  • Providing high quality facilities for the purpose of recreational outdoor activities, which will help to divert young people from socially unacceptable behaviours.

  • Reduce the numbers of young people hanging around on street corners etc. Thus hopefully reducing the fear of crime within the community.

  • Work closely with resident and community groups to provide leisure activities for young people during school holidays.

  • Empowerment of young people through their involvement in the project, this will provide personal development opportunities for those young people involved & help them develop more socially acceptable behaviours.

  • Facilities will be accessible to the whole of the local community & the multi use games areas in particular will be of specific use for a wide range of community sports activities.

The project will also involve working with a variety of local groups as well as working in close partnership with the Police, WCC Youth Workers and other agencies. Volunteers will be recruited from each community and will then offer assistance in training these individuals to become qualified Sports Coaches. It is hoped that these volunteers will establish and organise new weekly sports sessions.

The Sport and Recreation team are keen to share in "Best Practice". If you would like more information on this project including, job descriptions, funding for the position, yearly reports and other associated projects, please don't hesitate to contact the Officer.
