Active Recreation Officer

Background

A three year post funded by the Sport England Community Investment Fund to help reduce inequalities in leisure opportunities throughout the borough of Nuneaton & Bedworth.

The Active Recreation Officer will look to positively raise the awareness of the benefits of exercise through the promotion of physical activity, active recreation and sport across the borough.

Many individuals will not access a Leisure Facility or attend a sports club as they don’t feel they fit the mould of being fit or even young enough in some cases. This project aims to break down those barriers and build individuals self confidence. Introducing individuals to active recreation within their own areas, within the community where they feel more comfortable, increasing an individuals confidence to initially start exercising.

Children's Centres & Early Years Centres

In response to the information gained from surveys conducted on the users of the centre's and local residents in the Borough, various exercise sessions are being established within centre's in the community, in partnership with the on-site creches. By linking with the creche, we are hoping to remove childcare as a barrier to parents participating in sports and physical activity.

Sheltered Housing Development

The Active Recreation Officer and the Club Development Officer (CDO) are supporting Sheltered Housing Developments to form their own affiliated Sports and Social Clubs.
By establishing their own clubs and working in partnership with the Active Recreation Officer and CDO, assistance can be given to the groups in gaining funding for equipment and activities such as; Multi-Surface Bowls and seated exercise classes.

Community Classes

A number of sessions have been launched within various community venues to address the requests for physical activities following consultations. An exercise session has been established specifically for women, thus providing easier access to exercise for the Muslims and Nepalese women of Nuneaton & Bedworth.
