Criminal Record Bureau & Independent Safeguarding Authority Police Checks
Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)
The CRB has been around for a numbers of years now and is a mandatory requirement for any person wishing to work in close proximity to children or vulnerable adults on a regular basis.
As a sports club / organisation you have a moral responsibility to carry out CRB checks on anyone in the club / organisation who has close or unsupervised contact with children and vulnerable adults. Most NGB’s or voluntary organisations will do CRB checks on your behalf and the cost is free to volunteers. However please bear in mind some organisations charge an admin cost to carry out the cheque.
CRB checks should be carried out on all of the following within a sports club/organisations.
- Coaches
- Child Protection Officers
- Team Managers
- Membership Secretary
- Refreshment Personnel
- Volunteers who support with children or vulnerable adults.
Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA)
Launched on 19th October 2009 the ISA has been set up to support the Vetting and Barring of individuals wishing to work with those who are deemed vulnerable. ISA with support the current CRB system but will bring together a number of organisation lists to check the suitability of someone to work with children and vulnerable adults.
The scheme also now brings in some legal requirements, it will be soon against the law to allow anyone to actively engage in activities with children and vulnerable adults without having first conducting an ISA check on them. Also it brings another responsibility to anyone to report something to the ISA if they suspect someone of wrong doing.
The checks will be free to volunteers and each National Governing Body will be releasing their information shortly on the process.
