Project Details

An exciting community sports development scheme, which targets areas of social deprivation in Nuneaton & Bedworth.

Guidance is provided on subjects such as healthy living, Relationship & Sex Education (RSE) career & education  and sporting opportunities in the form of group and individual work to encourage participation with young people (8 – 24 years) also demonstrating pathways into local sports clubs and various support agencies.

After consultation with young people, sports activities and workshops are held at a variety of venues including the multi-use games areas, established youth clubs and community facilities.

Work in partnership with other agencies to assist in the reduction of nuisance crime, substance misuse and U18 conception rates, by providing positive activities, work experience and support.

An example of is 'Sports Against Drugs Day'...The annual event invites all Year 6 Pupils from target schools to join in a day of sport, with the message of saying no to substance misuse and is supported well by local agencies such as the police, fire service, community drug team

Partnership links have also been formed with the Common Assessment Framework, Youth Offending Team, Positive about Young People, and Warwickshire Teenage Pregnancy Partnership.

Strategically this project fits into the Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council's Community Plan, Crime & Disorder Strategy and Sport & Recreation Plan.

Drugs.. the latest stuff.....

  • Last year the government asked the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) to review the classification of cannabis to recommend whether it should stay as a Class C drug or be moved to a Class B.

The ACMD’s report confirms that cannabis poses a real threat to the health of those who use it since:

    • Most of the cannabis around today is much stronger than it used to be
    • they found that there is a probable, though weak, link between cannabis use and onset of psychotic illness

After considering the evidence in this latest report, the government have said that they intend to reclassify cannabis as a Class B drug and are looking to do this by the end of the year.
